Hi David,

The PrintPack software are the print drivers only, and assumes that you have
a serial to parallel cable. The PrintPack cable was originally manufactured
by GDT Softworks, later renamed InfoWave. They also make it under their own
label for the Mac, called a "PowerPrint" cable.

The only difference between this cable and the original Apple PrintPack
cable was that the PrintPack cable had the drivers builtin to the cable
head, so that when it was attached to the Newton, the drivers would
automatically download to the Newton. These drivers were the original,
rather slow "PrintPack 1" drivers. There was no way to upgrade the firmware
in the cablehead, so the "PrintPack 2" drivers were software only.

The GDT/InfoWave cable does not have the autodownload feature, but you don't
need it with the PrintPack 2 software. Load the software, attach a
PowerPrint cable and print, easy as that.

If you want a PowerPrint cable, go to eBay and search on "PowerPrint".
There are currently 6 auctions running on these types of cables, all
centering around $25.00 USD.

There was also a guy by the name of Paul Apefel (sp?) that was selling them
here on NewtonTalk, but I've lost his email address. :P

Good Luck!

Regards,

Gary

Hi,
I just have a quick question about the Newton print pack. Is it really
needed? I know that you can download the software from Apple, so the only
important part of the print pack would be the cable. I was told that the
cable was a "Smart Cable" and you could not use just a regular printer
cable. Is this true?
