NTLK ADVICE SOUGHT: MP2100 and null modem cable

Newton-Talkers:

I've got an MP2100 with NIE and wish to connect it to my Linux PC via a
null modem cable and use PPP.

I've got what should be a null modem cable (Apple supplied 9 pin female to
male mini-din 8). How in the world do I convince the Newton to use
it instead of a modem? Currently, it's configured to connect to a modem
on the serial port. This works fine with my USR Courier at home, but since
I don't have or need a modem while I'm in my cube at work, it poses quite
a problem for connecting with just the null modem cable.

(I've succesfully configured the machine to act as PPP server, and have
convinced my Palm VII to use PPP to connect to the outside world, so
the Linux side is not an issue.)

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
