Hi, Paul.

Well, the PowerList stayed eerily quiet on the subject of ATA flash cards, I
suppose they are not exactly a popular storage option among PowerBook users.

However, I did some searching myself, and have found the following Apple TIL
article, which explains how to format ATA flash cards on a PowerBook:

http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n16891

It describes how a DOS formatted flash card can only be reformatted in HFS
format after the "PC Exchange" (that's "File Exchange" on newer systems)
control panel has been switched off.

That is probably the reason your friend's PowerBook refused to format the
card you tried.

So, the final answer is yes; PowerBooks can use HFS formatted ATA cards.
