Optical out is great, instead of using wire it uses light. There are no line
loses/noise like you get when using wire.
On the back of my stereo the is a small square plug that the cable plugs
into. The cable has a matching plug on one end, the other end has a jack
that looks like a stereo 1/8" jack only it has a opening in the end and the
cable itself is basically a filiment. They warn you that they are fragile
and not to kink or bend them as the filiment will break. Only some stereo's
have the optical out.
