I experienced the same problem with my MP120 OS2. When I replaced the four AA for new ones, the Newton refused to turn on again. When I plugged the AC adapter, the Newton worked fine, but without it the MP didn't work. I saw that the black plastic flip inside the battery compartiment was bended in the wrong position, so I put it the same position as It had before the battery replacement. I also cleaned the metal terminals. After all these, the Newton turned on normally. I hope this experience could be usefull fot you.
