I know that when I left the list a while ago there was talk of a replacement
to the dongle and someone (Digital Ocean Dave?) had begun work on this.
It was also being mentioned that it was possible to replace the backlights
(with different colors!), but I don't know if anything ever came of it.
There was also talk of forming a group that would financially back
developments of the sort you mention.
It seems like the Newton community has such a strong base of support among
the real techies, that I am surprised more hasn't come in the way of the
hardware expansions as you envision.
Perhaps someone can bring the list up to speed on developments in this area.
