Having watched quite a few of these WWDC videos, it looks like each presenter had the opportunity to have a small personal item on their desk for the video.  My guess is it's just what this engineer chose.

Also, as part of this presentation, they design an iOS app for ordering soup, so maybe that was an additional Newton reference... or just a coincidence.  :D

I sooo love it when one of us jumps at the mere possibility that someone 
at Apple is secretly conveying to us that they are going to resurrect 
our beloved Newton - or similar. LOL

But it was VERY cool to see it sitting there, stylus at the ready.
