You can use them, but the standard battery gauge will be off.  There is a package that you can install which allows to set which kind of battery is installed.  It is called Nick's SoftCharge.  It is a help for Nimh as well since by default the battery tray will flag the batteries as alkaline.  If I remember right you can select NiMh, NiCad, lithium, or alkaline.  Either way there won't be any damage from using them even if you don't install Nick's SoftCharge.
