[NTLK] OT: iPod hard drive blue foam, does one need it?

From swapping the hard drive, ribbon cable, and battery in my Photo 60, I would say that the foam is there to keep the hard drive in place.

Without the foam, the hard drive can move around and hit the back cover (vibration and clanking noise) as well as move laterally flexing the ribbon cable. The ribbon cable is pretty fragile.

I had replaced my hard drive and was almost ready to replace my whole iPod when I replaced the ribbon cable, and after ordering 2 to get one good one, it is back to working really well.

So, foam, my vote is motion control.
