WOOHOO! Being able to do this without getting sued is big. Where exactly are you guys on rewriting routines? I remember that being talked about a while back; it was very exciting then, but even more so now.

NewtonOS is 20 years old. That means that all NewtonOS 1.0 patents are expired and all 2.1 patents will soon expire.

Sure, Apple still has the Copyright for the ROM, but now we can write our own ROM, implementing all Newton features without violating any patents. Nice!

Doing this would mean Einstein with our own ROM. Even better, it would improve speed 10 fold and more, partially running at full native host speed, making NewtonOS-like apps possible on even the smallest PDAs, making it possible to interface easily to CalDAV and other services, and so much more.

What a great birthday!

Here are a few examples for other systems, proving that it can be done.

http://www.reactos.org - a rewrite of Windows NT
http://www.winehq.org - a windows simulator
http://www.ardi.com/executor.php - a MacOS simulator including a rewrite of large parts of MacOS
http://darling.dolezel.info/en/Darling - a Darwin/OS X emulation layer, also rewriting large parts of the OS
