Yes, 7447A and 7448 processors require a firmware update (actually, the same update works for both). But even if you had waited to Newertech/Powerlogix to release the 7448, they sold them for a lot more money than a 7447A. So it wasn't worth it at the time.

I had forgotten about the VRM bypass mod. Your memory is better than mine. I only remember NewerTech every getting their 7448 G4 to market. Sadly I couldn't wait long enough for the 7448 to be released and bought a dual 1.8GHz 7447A from GigaDesigns back in 2007 for my QuickSilver. These days the system is down clocked to 1.6GHz for stability and acts has my storage server.
