I suggest that it is not unlike "altogether" and "all together".

A handbasket would be something you would carry around the house, perhaps in the garden whilst gathering together a small bouquet of flowers...while a HAND BASKET would be something much larger, like what one would take to the market for a few day's worth of groceries.
