You might want to try the reset procedure outlined at the top of this page:

This page is for a 130, but it works for all Newton models.

The key to success is to do it EXACTLY as described, regardless of how
unimportant a particular step may seem to you, and in EXACTLY the same
order. 

If the Newton in question is a 130, it might suffer from the problems that
every 130 will eventually suffer from:

In this case you will not be able to avoid having it serviced unless you
have the equipment and the skill to solder tiny electronic parts under a
microscope :-)
