Since 2000, there have been "red states" and "blue states" in
presidential elections with "red states" having given electoral
college votes to Republicans (conservatives) and the "blue states"
having voted for Democrats (liberals). When talking about these
states in general, there are also "purple states" that are somewhat
wishy-washy and vote for both parties (in different elections of
course). This doesn't really make sense, but that's how it is here.

Ha! No kidding, the spectrum keeps moving to the right here, which
depending on how you look at it is either a good thing or a bad
thing, but is actually a bad thing.
