smtp.orange.es suggests three default ports, 25, 465, 587. I tried
with 587, but SimpleMail still indicated it was unable to resolve the
IP address.

Then I thought I'd try the Gmail server, so changed the SMTP setting
to smtp.gmail.com:995 and modified the username and password settings,
too. This returned the same "unable to resolve the IP address" error.
I then removed the ":995" extension to the SMTP parameter, but the
result was still the same.

In case it helps, the lights on the Lucent card show a constant green
and an irregular flashing green during the "Looking up host" phase;
the flashing light goes out as soon as the error message is displayed;
the constant light goes out perhaps half a minute later.
