Hello:

It's funny, I search for blogs on speech recognition, and search for tips and tricks, not much to be found out there. Also, not much action on this list. It has its limits, but I fully adopted speech recognition under OSx this week, and been very happy. My hands are getting a much deserved rest, and it feels great and liberating to operate my computer and input text without touching it.

I'm using a wireless Logitech clear chat USB headset, it allows me to be about 25 feet away from the computer. I guess we are all waiting for the Bluetooth 3.0 standard to hit so all those nifty Bluetooth earpieces, once operating off of Bluetooth 3.0 standards, will likely be able to have enough power to drive speech-recognition.

As it sits, they just don't cut the mustard. Fortunately, Logitech's clear chat USB wireless headset gives us an option. It uses a thumb drive USB 2.4 GHz receiver that is more powerful than even the most expensive portable USB/Bluetooth your pieces.

I will be testing Dragon Speak with the dragon hack2 for the Newton this weekend and will see what I come up with.

All the best,

Ryan

Subject: [NTLK] Speech Recognition

Hello:

I have been messing around with, and finally have started using speech recognition under OS X. In fact, I use MacSpeech as well. The built-in speech recognition in OS X is second to none in terms of accuracy and speed when it comes to speech recognition for things like opening and switching applications, navigating the web, and the like. MacSpeech allows for the Speech to text component: I cycle it from sleep to wake. For instance, when I use OS X's built in speech recognition, I put MacSpeech to sleep, and wake it when I want speech to text recognition. So far so good. I am really liking it, and find typing Emails now such a drag.

But speech only works in quiet environments, so it has its limits. I am working on getting a wireless USB headset to work with it so I can try to free myself at times from having to sit down at a computer. So far, with my testing, it is production ready. For instance, I have been creating, crafting, and sending Emails without touching the computer.

Now, to the Newton. It is really too bad that the Newton does not have voice recognition. I know Dragon Naturally Speaking had a Beta application for it, and I even installed it at one point. But it is limited and not really usable. So, wondering if anyone knows of anything out there for the Newton, and if any of you actually have become enamored with speech recognition under OS X.

All the best,

Ryan
