I think the Newton is inviting to people because of its rarity and wow factor these days. When ever I used mine in public people wanted to know what it was and what it could do. I also think if people see you typing on a small electronic device they think your writing sms or some other form of electronic communication and ignoring them. It just seems more natural to people to write down a note during a conversation then type a note I think.
As a side note: I have no problem with the iphone/itouches size, its bigger then my blackberry and smaller then my newt which is just right for me (I use my iPod touch daily) but I do agree they need to focus more on function over fluff in the base software. But I guess the fluff is what made the mass market really like it and help assure its success and continued development. Maybe like the original iPod now that the devices have proved successful in the market they'll start adding more useful, but less flashy, functions like the upcoming copy and paste.
