So you never used a Rio Karma? Big for its time (20GB), with Ogg Vorbis and
FLAC support (for people who couldn't stand the awfulness of MP3s), and a
user friendly interface, this thing had everything but the looks. My son
got his years ago -- 2003 I think? -- and I was quietly envious. Its
ability to handle diferent formats including lossless (and I don't mean
Apple's proprietary latecomer to the party) and clean operation were a
pleasure to use. And I loved its ease with gapless playback, at a time when
iTunes still didn't "get" gapless playback.

I still think it's quality, apart from the vulnerable design of the corner
scrollwheel. My son still has his, and there are people who would buy it if
he'd sell it. I now have an iPod Classic (160gb), because I wanted quantity
of music on the road, and I've reconciled myself to the fact that at my age,
my ears no longer qualify as audiophile's ears. But if I were younger, that
Karma and I ...!

I can't speak for the quality (or otherwise) of the remanufactured Karma,
but the original was a beacon in the darkness. "Sucked"? Nah.

Shalom.
