Hi Jon:

Well, I guess I wouldn't be recommending it if it didn't work well...

It is much faster than 90 wpm. You can speak (as long as it is clear) as fast as you can and it will pick everything up.

I type 80 WPM (real, tested score) when dictating from another text. When engaging in speech to text, what is the equivalent typing speed?

With practice, you can get 160 WPM+.

The latest MacSpeech Dictate comes on a DVD (1.5 GB of data) and includes a large dictionary. So errors are mitigated (think of the 2100's dictionary word count - 93,000 compared to the MP 130's - 13,000). There are far less errors in the HWR on the 2100 compared to the MP 130 because it has far more words to choose from. Same too with this latest version of MacSpeech Dictate.

It really has been like going from a Newton 1.x device to a Newton 2.1 device in terms of speed and accuracy.

My suggestion: try it yourself and see if you like it.

When typing casually, or when thinking, I average over 60 wpm. When
dictating or writing previously-written text, I'm near 90. I do this
with nearly 0 errors, and correcting only slows me down a trifle. How
do you do with voice recognition on average? I'm really curious how
simple it is to correct, and how it effects your overal speed. I've
watched Dave Pogue demo Naturally Speaking, and frankly, I wasn't too
impressed with it--ok, it is impressive to watch it happen, but it's
also impressive to watch a dog dance. ;-) Doesn't mean the dog dances
beautifully, nor does it mean I want to use speech recognition, but
I'm curious how well you do on average. :-0
