I have to speak up about my email provider. Years ago, my AOL email
got massively hit with spam (I called one of the spammer's 800
numbers, and complained. After that, I got hit super-big-time--learned
a lesson) ;-) I switched to netaddress.com, with my email being
@usa.net. It is now paid--costing about $50 per year (with early
renewal discounts), or maybe less. But they use Brightmail for spam
filtering. They also provide IMAP. One of the options is to have your
spam saved in a junk mail folder, labeled with the [SPAM] flag in the
subject. I find this ideal. I also appreciate how Brightmail only
flags mail that has only been proven to be spam. They have a rather
complex rule base, but it seems to be quite effective. I've had very
few false positives with them, the most notable being TidBits a few
years back. But, since I can go onto the web interface, and request to
have it unflagged (it's actually reviewed, and if deemed a false
positive, it gets removed from their list. I like it a lot. I also
have about two or three of my own rules that are header-based that
grab most of the rest of my spam, as well as the occasional false
positive--but almost invariably, these false positives are those
forwarded emails that I tend to delete anyway, so it doesn't bother
me. I check my junk mail probably every other day. Oh, and since I use
Mail.app, when one of these gets in, I simply flag it as spam, and
then unflag it. This seems to prevent email from these people going
into my spam filter any more. I don't know how that works, but it
seems to work quite well. :-)

So, in the end, my spam problems are very minor, despite getting
hundreds and hundreds every week.
