I'm sure both you and your child will love the 2x00.
Sounds like you are on your way to getting your serial connection
going. This will let you install applications, updates and other
enhancements. UNNA <http://www.unna.org/view.php> is an excellent
source for software.
I used the newton through my transition from OS 9 to each version of
OS X. I used Classic quite successfully with a G4 running 10.3.
I am now happy with NCX and OS X. There is not a good bookmaker for
os x but books can be made on the Newt via NewtsCape.
  If you have an ethernet network you may be able to get ethernet
cards for your 2x00 Newtons and connect to NCX via ethernet. Initial
setup can be challenging but well worth it. And you can use email to
send info from the Newt.

As you identify needs or problems this list can often be helpful.
