Some of the aggravation may be helped by choices appropriate to your
needs in the 'Print and Fax' preference pane (I am looking at
Tiger). In particular, there is the selection of the Default
Printer, and then there's the Selected Printer in the Print Dialog.
You could have a scenario with one printer set up as the default
(which would receive output from, as an example, printing from
Finder, which doesn't put up a Print Dialog), and another printer
show up as 'default' within the Print Dialog when choosing 'Print'
from an application's menu). To enhance the possibility for
confusion, there is also an option to show the 'Last Printer
Used' (whatever that means in the previous context) in the Print
Dialog, which could lead to erroneous printing. It may be that, by
tweaking these settings for each user, you can minimize the potential
for headaches.
