Regarding your intention for mini notebooks, John...

Although it doesn't exactly qualify as a mini notebook, the HP TC1100 is
a fine and affordable portable piece of engineering. One can find at
ebay the 1'2 GHZ model for about 400$, wich is not much more than the
cost of an eeePC, but you get a nice 10'4" 1024x768 display with
digitizer and hardware acceleration. Also the default battery time is
about 2:30 hours, but reducing the brightness and disabling the wifi I
made mine to run for almost 4 hours (playing MP3 and writing text if
you're curious).

Windows XP Tablet by default, but full Linux support (although some
components may be tricky to install).

And... Plus for the list. It is not being manufactured anymore and has a
got a cult following behing from users that vouch for this little laptop
that still can.
