I second the suggestion to go for an N800; and on mine, I use Modest Mail. It's the default email client on Diablo (the current release of Maemo) and I like it a lot.

But believe me, if you wind up sort of liking the 770, go ahead and
pick up an n800. Two regular SD card slots. Runs the latest OS.
Plays videos and music much better.
