Door locks will not deter a committed, skilled thief. But that's not
their purpose. They are really only useful in deterring the casual,
opportunistic thief. That they make the homeowner >feel< secure is an
mere side effect of human nature (but one that permits us to remain
psychologically comfortable in a scary world).
A really good thief can break through even good wireless encryption,
but on most systems the payoff is simply too small to bother. MAC
filtering will keep most of the riffraff at bay in any but the most
tech-sophisticated neighborhoods...
