Actually the "provide a social benefit" is a historical definition.
Corporations like the Dutch East India were set up and have social
benefit as part of their charters but they did NOT hold the status
they do today of legal persons.

But that has changed and companies today have "rights" just like any
person.
It does make me wonder when a merger of companies will be termed a
marriage and thereby avoid regulatory approvals :)
