I didn't contact the author, however I discovered that after you have
tried logging in with the correct username, you can then select the
correct username from a pull down list at the login screen. After you
set the correct password you can then set the username using this
list and it seems to stick.

I have been able to log into the jabber server at tipic.com this way.
