That must be the old original Bondi blue imac. Usually the invisible
hard drive you describe is caused by certain aftermarket drives
(some fujitsus), and/or strange master slave jumper settings...

I don't know about IR via Ubuntu, that seems mondo sketchy. I think
there was a way to simple add a serial port to that machine though...
If I remember that far back.

You might try a google search for that?

PS I don't think the peforma IR is of any use either, but it's serial
port should be ok ;~)
