Addendum:

I downloaded and installed the Mac OS 8-9 driver for use in Classic
mode. I was able to successfully use both NCU and Wildcat through the
dock's serial port, and subsequently used Escale to enter text to the
Newton. So, it appears that the Prolific USB-Serial drivers for Mac OS
X and Classic coexist gracefully.
