Matt,

You are much better off charging the cells externally in a charger
that monitors each cell individually for voltage and temperature. The
cells will last longer, charge faster and with two sets you are up
and running immediately.

Charging in the Newt means charging them in series which will quickly
work on the small differences between the cells so that some are more
stressed than others and decline more rapidly.

It also puts some stress on the internal charging circuits and with
ageing components it's more likely to cause a failure.
