It could be that the contrast adjustment is out. When you think the
Extras are open, tap in the middle bottom of the screen, about 3/4
inch above the screen edge and see if you can't restore the setting
so it becomes visible.

When the backlight is on this is perfectly normal. The transformer
supplies the power required and some get quite noisy. If the
backlight is not on, nothing should be audible.
