I'm afraid many of you are wrong. The very first GUI was not
developed by Xerox. Though Xerox did take many of the concepts such
as the mouse and it's paradigm a step further, the original mouse and
the concepts it held were developer by Douglas Englebart. The first
commercial GUI was the Lisa I believe

The Mother of all Demos:
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/gui.ars/2
or you can google "the mother of all demos"

For a really interesting look go to archive.org
and search for "Doing with images makes symbols"

There are two parts. If you have never seen this two part video
sponsored by Apple Computer and hosted by Alan Kay you will be
profoundly intrigued. This is a most revealing video and extremely
interesting. You will see the very first HWR system, it's incredibly
accurate, you will see the very first object oriented vector drawing
application, all done in the 60s, the first mouse and primitive GUI.

Here is a short review by one of the downloaders of this video:
"This is an exceptional piece of computer history. I often use this
video when teaching computer history or introduction to computing to
my students of all ages. This video by Alan Kay includes a much
earlier video of Doug Engelbart (1968)and his pioneering work in
computing. Anyone teaching computer history or related subjects
should view this, and may want to incorporate it into their courses.
Alan Kay, and Doug Engelbart, are two of the heavyweights in computer
development. This is an amazing video!"

Part 1 and 2 can be found here for your downloading pleasure for
absolutely free as it's an open source movie.
