'Xactly 'm sayin', mah man! The entry level drug for me was compact and
highly portable ebook-reader. I'd known about Project Gutenberg and other
sources for a while, but had never seen a robust, cheap, portable reader.
Then I got myself an inexpensive MP 130, which was all I'd dreamt off.
Well, not inexpensive, though - two trips to Dr. Grundelstein's Institute
for Delinquent MessagePads had to be added to the buying price. Still,
every trip was in turn recuperated by money saved on two months reading matter.

Then I started to log new addresses on the Newt, also a few dates and
to-dos ("The ebook reader with added bang!"), which I continued after
moving to one of those brilliant Dr. GruendelsteinPad 2g00 ("The ebook
reader with plenty added bang!"). Of course this also carries some other
stuff, such as DeepGreen and some apps, but the daily chore is as ebook
reader (approx. 2 hours a workday during train commutes - BTW, I need new
reading matter, so if you have a new ebook I might like, drop me a line). I
also like Notes, for sketching lists, e.g. playlists for my radio show - I
sit in the train and cough up a show, wasted time well used.
I think I'll dig into Bluetooth later this fall when/if I have that
PowerBook, so I'll synch and everything via BT. That'll also make internet
and email more interesting than with ethernet, and I'll check out VNC and
other stuff which totally wouldn't be of interest when using a bigger iron.
And from there I think there'll be many more things to discover... E.g.
synching Newton-DBs with MS Access databases, synching Newton Spreadsheets
with Excel sheets, and whatever.

Wouldn't want to do any graphic work and publishing on the Newt, though,
and I'm pretty sure I couldn't write articles very well or edit other
people's stories if I still were in the business. I always need plenty
screen real estate, so I can overlook easily several paragraphs and juggle
text-bits and cut out redundancies, trimming the text down to 98% payload,
2% fat (for added flavor). The Newt might be worth gold to write rough
drafts and sketches in the field, and send them to HQ to your editor, but
it's no editing platform in my humble opinion.

So there. Every tool has it's purpose, and some several. You won't try to
turn screws with a hammer, though you might try to nail down something with
a screwdriver. But then what do I know.

Cordially,

D. Vollkasko
