I would never try a direct modem2modem connection.
Normally modems as well as telephones need a feed (20 ... 60V dc)that
normally comes via the phone line.
To do such experiments I normally use a small (home)switchboard.
Also a modem cannot generate a ring signal (20 ... 60V ac)
