As mentioned before though, the main source of hum is inverter, which steps up the voltages to the crazy-high level required by el based stuff. I don't know what the voltages are for stock Newt backlights or there replacements, but some el-wire I was playing with required 10,000V, and hummed V.loudly.

Perhaps different colours require different voltages?
