Re: [NTLK] [NTLK][FS] eMate 300 - Question to List Members

Woody,

I just acquired a "never used e-mate" from a school. Still had the
original plastic in place. I also acquired one of the 26 dollar ones
too.

Would like to have the spring repair done now instead of waiting. Can
you contact me off list?

Alan

This is exciting news and along with many low cost offerings on eBay of
eMates it is a great opportunity for folks to experience the eMate.
The eMate is an excellent laptop.
People who have been reading this list for even a few months are aware
of a few important issues related to this laptop, but if you are not
please consider.

. Only use an Apple Newton brand power adapter 5 or 7 watt will work.
Many list members have used off the shelf adapters successfully but
others have fried their Newton--be safe.

. TAKE THE LID TENSIONING SPRING PROBLEM seriously. I just opened my
second eMate in as many days and found the spring released and
beginning to damage the display ribbon. In both cases the unit felt
and behaved just fine so don't wait to here the spring release as it
may have already done so. Each time the lid is opened and closed the
sharp end of the spring scrapes across the ribbon. In the case of the
two units I worked on the display ribbon was punctured but no traces
were cut (just lucky). Others in the recent past have recommended
injecting oil into the spring, but I don't know how to tell if the
spring is released without looking. MAKE this repair or find someone
on the list to do it for you.

. eMate batteries are easy and fun to re-cell.
