Maybe you can learn goold old UNIX a bit and just then begin
to wonder what you can do with telnet...

I've been managing UNIX networks for several years and,

1 - yes, I've sent a lot of email with a telnet client (my mailer
     of choice still is 'elm')

2 - yes, I've been browsing the net with telnet. Elinks and lynx come
to my mind and, yes, they can do https

The whole purpose of telnet is being able to connect and run apps
remotely, as you were on the computer console. Think about it as
the grandpa of 'terminal services'. So, you can do system maintenance
or run simple, text oriented programs while being physically in another
location.

Well, I just remembered that, 12 years ago, I used my credit card
to buy a book from 'books.com' (the largest online library before
amazon, now defunct) using a telnet interface.... ahh... it was
much, much faster than today's heavy pages full of advertisement
images.
