it's not frowned upon necessarily, but bid sniping is the "technical"
term for this activity.

I use a free software(jbidwatcher) which will run on any Java
compatible platform(OSX for me), and allows browsing of auctions,
searching of auctions, and most usefully sniping.

So I leave it running on my old OSX server, and tell it how much to
bid, and it will try and do so directly before the auction ends.
