I cannot test this right now, so I'm grateful that you are doing it for us....
I have dowloaded (to the Mac) NamesCleanup, sbmutils and names_fi,
but from what you say, that won't do it.

I 'sync' from OSX through serial (keyspan). I use nSync (0.3m),
fought a bit and have given up iCal sync'ing. I n'Synced to (an
empty) Address book, and as I said, everything seemed to go over in
operational state. I transferred all Notes to MacJournal with full
sucess; but found out that transferring a MacJournal- 2.1.1-generated
note gave the parenthesis problem: the note was transferred to the
Newt up to but not including the closing ')' parenthesis.

I've opened Escale and played with it a bit but did not transfer
anything but a pagkage ( forget which...).

I think that's all....
Sorry I can't contribute right now; I'll get back on tests when I
have time to do them -
