Packager and the other file typers change the file type and creator
codes, which OSX doesn't even look at.

OSX has been dumbed down to accept the "standard" of three letter file
extensions for file type recognition. This is kind of a lame system
compared to old school mac, but in an age of internet connectivity to
other systems, it actually makes sense for mac people to understand
that foreign systems will need the three letter extension to figure out
what it is.

Still there is PLENTY of room for improvement in this department with
regards to OSX IMHO. The finder could actively analyze data when you
want it to (ala Maclink) or if there is no extension on a file (for
example).

My last message describes how you can use the File menu in the finder
(first highlite the file in question) to select the Get info option
from where you can tell your mac exactly which program you want to open
a particular file. This is nice, because it allows you to force the
mac to do what you want (assuming you know what your doing :~)
