See

for a similar history.

In my case, using Marco's method, I fixed my two Newts and two other list
member's Newts by trimming down the inside lip of the front case half. In
other words, it necessitates a full dismantling and about 20 minutes with
either a single edge razor blade, x-acto knife, or dremel tool. Frank's site
has details on dissasembly and reassembly.

I have a sketch of the part of the case innerds that needs to be removed, and
I can send it to you if you'd like to try the fix yourself. Contact me offline
and I'll send it to you. I can also apply the same fix for a fee. If indeed
the digitizer is toast and the modification has no effect, then I don't charge
anything.
