Hello Blake,
Have you checked your printer to see if it has an IrDA "eye"?
If so, it may respond to print commands from your Newton. First, align your
Newton so that it's IrDA "eye" is aimed directly at the one on your printer.
Turn on the printer. Then, try to send a print job to that printer. I know
that with my HP DeskJet 340 printer, I can send print jobs via the IrDA
accessory attachment on my printer. There is a software package that are is intended
to improve IrDA communications with the HP printer, BUT, this software
package may also work with your printer. Don't know. You'll have to experiment a
bit. If that printer does not respond to IrDA print commands, break down and
buy a cable. they're cheap. Good luck. :O)

Warmest regards,

Matt K.
