I am not sure since I don't know how the SETI_at_Home software works
(internally).

I lowered the color level to 256.

Used 800x600.

Upped the RAM from 32MB to 128MB. Seemed to make a difference, albiet
slight.

I think your guess about 9 may be right.

For me, around 168 hours (24x7), or one per week, is my limit. Slower
than that, and it's just too boring! :-o

I like watching the screen saver version -- Win or Mac!

I was running on X.1, and my system got completely hosed. I am not sure,
but I think I had it running on 9 in classic mode as well -- by accident.
 Anyhow, a reformated disk and reinstalled system and apps solved the
problem.

Too bad we can't figure a way to run SETI on the Newt! ;-)

Woo and his family of Newts would get us off to a good start! :-)

Seriously, if there were some folks interested it might be fun to form a
Newton Team.
