Alternatively, you're not authenticated at all; this is the kind of error
message one gets from an SMTP server when one connects and tries to send
mail to an address that is not local to that server. If properly
configured, it *ought* to refuse this unless it knows that you are a local
user. Since authenticated SMTP is not a widely supported feature, many
sites use a hack called "POP before SMTP", where you connect (and
authenticate) to retrieve your mail via POP, and the server remembers your
IP for a several minutes, using that to allow you to send mail via the SMTP
server...
So you might try setting up authenticated SMTP, or having your mail client
retrieve your mail before trying to send (you should set your network
connection preferences to NOT disconnect immediately, so that you're
guaranteed not to change IP addresses between checking and sending).
