Remember that all "new" battery packs are at least 5 years old!
They can't have an indefinite shelf life, even if unopened, and sooner or
later they are going to die.

I have a small stock of these batteries bought at the same time as I got my
original MP2Ks. So far I haven't had a dud, but I make sure I know where the
dry cell holders are!
