Please check first if you have the right cable:
what you need is a cable with crossed connections between SEND and RECEIVE.
This NOT a standard Apple serial (modem) cable!
You can check that using a simple continuity tester or you simply try the
same cable connected to a so called 0-modem adaptor, which performs the
crossing for you.
