on the Newton, there's PilotDoc plugin (in conjunction with Newt's
Cape); however, this works only with a few basic Palm book formats (not
the proprietary ones); unfortunately, there are lot of similar but
incompatible formats.

on desktop, there are variety of conversion tools. you could then feed
text into Paperback, Press, etc.
