[NTLK] ethernet connection problem

Despite trying and retrying the ethernet set up instructions contained in the wonderful FAQ, I'm unable to get my 2000 to connect. I know of no way to test the connection, but when I launch Nethopper, I get an error -61001. I can find no reference to that error either.
I'm using a 3c589; the card works fine in a pc laptop.
