Hi Colin
  I am using the 3Com 3CXE589ET. When I insert it into the Newt the
light flashes for only about half a second and and a window on the Newt
opens and identifies the card as Megahertz 589E.
If nothing shows up as did with mine until I installed the extension
3C589 and z3ComDrv:clli
Do you have extensions like these installed?
I seem to recall that you live in Minnesota. Que computers on East
Hennepin in Minneapolis has the 3Com 3CXE589ET for about $10 if you
get into the cities.
