The ATA driver is in no way a substitute for the memory upgrade. ATA
storage cannot extend the heap space available, only the internal
memory upgrade can do this.

It's soldered on.
Personally I would upgrade the 2000, and have two good 2100 type units.

PS Your slowdown on the 2100 might be caused by memory fragmentation.
